I had submitted “In Times Like These” and “I Thought It Would Be Great to Be a Man” before my wife and I knew we would be moving within 45 miles of Vermillion, SD, home to both the University of South Dakota and the South Dakota Review. I didn’t receive the acceptance for issue 50.2 until we’d moved into our apartment in Sioux City. It was the best welcome-to-Siouxland gift I could have imagined.
Excerpt from “In Times Like These”:
This isn’t the same world now is it?
The paintings don’t occupy the same
delicate coordinates in the universe they used to.
Here we are at Madigan’s on a Thursday night
looking into the mirror on the other side of the room.
Neither of us is as good looking as we used to be.
Or as honest.
